Severe Hailstorm Slams Pearland, Tomball, Magnolia, Fresno, and Sienna

HOUSTON, TX - May 6, 2025 – On the evening of May 5th, 2025, residents across Pearland, Fresno, Iowa Colony, Shadow Creek Ranch, Tomball, Brenham, and Stagecoach were shaken by a sudden and intense hailstorm that swept through the Greater Houston area. With hailstones reported up to 2 inches in diameter, widespread property damage was reported across neighborhoods in Brazoria, Fort Bend, and Montgomery counties. And the threat isn't over yet: the National Weather Service warns of continued hail and tornado risks today (May 6th) and tomorrow (May 7th) across much of the Houston metro.

If you live in any of the impacted areas, it's critical to understand the risk hail poses to your roof, how to identify signs of hail damage, your rights as a Texas homeowner when filing an insurance claim, and how Martin Roofing and Solar can help.

What Happened on the May 5th Houston Hail Storm?

Beginning in the late afternoon, severe thunderstorms fired up west of Houston and rapidly intensified. As the storm front moved eastward, hail-producing supercells dropped damaging hail on communities including:

  • Pearland: Neighborhoods near Shadow Creek Ranch and Silverlake saw vehicles pelted and roof granules washed into driveways.

  • Fresno & Iowa Colony: Large hail up to 1.75" fell in clusters, damaging solar panels, shingles, and AC units.

  • Tomball: Reports of hail dents on metal roofing, cracked skylights, and granule loss across roofs.

  • Stagecoach (Montgomery County): Some of the strongest and most dense hail impacts were recorded here, with multiple homeowners reporting dented cars and roof damage!

With more storms in the forecast, roof damage left unaddressed could compound quickly.

Ongoing Hail and Tornado Risk for Houston: May 6 & 7

The Houston area remains under threat as the same unstable air mass lingers over Southeast Texas. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Level 3 Enhanced Risk for severe weather, including large hail, damaging winds, and isolated tornadoes, for both May 6th and 7th.

If you suspect damage from Monday's hailstorm or if future storms cause more damage, it's important to act before minor roof issues escalate into major leaks or mold problems.

How Hail Damages Roofs in Houston

Hailstorms like the one on May 5th in Pearland and Tomball can wreak havoc on roofs, especially those with asphalt shingles, tile, or even metal panels. Here are common types of hail damage to roofs in Texas:

  • Granule loss: The tiny granules that protect asphalt shingles are stripped away, shortening the roof's lifespan and exposing underlayment.

  • Shingle bruising or cracking: These structural compromises are often invisible from the ground but weaken your roof.

  • Punctured underlayment: This allows water to infiltrate the layers of your roof.

  • Bent or dented metal flashing and vents: A telltale sign of hail impact.

Hail damage is especially serious in hot, humid climates like Houston, where moisture intrusion can quickly lead to mold growth and rot. Read all about how hail actually damages your roof here.

Ground-Level Signs of Roof Hail Damage You Can Check

You don’t need to get on a ladder to identify potential hail damage. Here are clear signs from the ground that your home may have been impacted:

✓ Torn or Shredded Leaves in Your Yard

If you see green leaves scattered on the ground or holes in leaves, hail hit hard. Damaged vegetation is a strong indicator that your roof took a similar beating.

✓ Sand-like Granules at Downspouts or Gutters

Granule buildup where gutters drain suggests shingles were compromised. This is one of the earliest warning signs of roof damage.

✓ Dents on Mailboxes, AC Units, or Cars

If your vehicle or HVAC unit is dented, your roof is likely damaged too. These visible signs often precede hidden roofing issues.

✓ Holes in Window Screens Around the Home

After a hailstorm, check window screens around your property. Torn window screens are a clear sign of hail damage.

✓ Dented Gutters and Downspouts

Dented gutters and downspouts is yet another example of commonly seen signs of hail damage.

If you see any of these symptoms of warning signs of hail damage from the ground level, we strongly encourage you to book your no obligation FREE Roof Inspection today!

Should You File a Roof Insurance Claim in Texas After a Hailstorm?

Yes — if your roof was damaged by the May 5th hailstorm, you are entitled to file a homeowners insurance claim. But, first it's best to see if you even have anything to worry about with our free no-obligation roof inspection! Hailstorms are classified as "Acts of God" in Texas, which means:

Your insurance company cannot legally raise your premiums simply because you file a claim.

According to the Texas Department of Insurance:

"An insurance company can't raise your rates or cancel your policy solely because you file a claim for weather-related damage." Read more on the Texas Department of Insurance website

Filing a claim now could save you thousands in future repair costs, especially if another storm hits this week and causes further damage.
